Seconds Collect Thirteen Points From Drawn Championship Fixture

Seconds Collect Thirteen Points From Drawn Championship Fixture

Worcestershire Seconds collected a haul of 13 points from their second Championship match of the season against MCC Young Cricketers at High Wycombe which ended in a draw to conclude a successful week for coach Alex Gidman’s side.

The Seconds had defeated the same opponents in the Trophy at Merchant Taylor’s School on Tuesday to maintain their 100 per cent record in the competition after three matches.

They then dominated most of the three days against MCC YC in the Championship fixture after recovering from a poor first session with the ball.

But the pitch flattened out on the final day and the home side, facing a first innings deficit of 137, were able to reach 278-5 by the close.

The Worcestershire bowlers again battled away with determination after MCC YC had resumed on 4-0 and triallist Tommy Sturgess picked up three wickets.

But openers Ben Curran and Joe Barrett laid the foundations for the MCC YC to save the game with a stand of 88.

Sturgess made the initial breakthrough by bowling the latter for 54.

But Curran went onto make 73 and there were other useful contributions from Jakob Bhula (45) and Marc Lezar (53 not out) in making the game safe.

Sturgess finished with 3-36 from 10 overs and there was a wicket apiece for Pat Brown and Zen Malik.

*The Seconds return to Trophy action on Tuesday when they take on Nottinghamshire at Kidderminster.
