worcestershire batsman hamish rutherford has been called into new zealand’s squad for the final t20i in the three-match series in sri lanka.
rutherford will fly out this evening for friday’s encounter in the pallekele international stadium in kandy.
the 30-year-old will return on saturday and be available for worcestershire’s final three specsavers county championship matches of the campaign – starting with tuesday’s encounter with glamorgan at New Road.
however, this means he is not available for the rapids vitality blast quarter-final against sussex sharks at the 1st central county ground, hove on friday.
rutherford has been called up by his country after another rapids 2019 player in martin guptill has been ruled out of the third t20i through injury.
cricket new zealand confirmed he is suffering from a right abdomen strain sustained when fielding in the second t20i – also in kandy yesterday – which meant he did not bat.
rutherford’s last t20i for the black caps was six years ago, also against sri lanka and in kandy.
