RHODES UNBEATEN ON 89 AS SECONDS TRIUMPH IN OPENER AGAINST SHROPSHIRE

George Rhodes hit an unbeaten 89 as Worcestershire Seconds launched their summer with a five wicket win over Shropshire in a 50 over match at Wrekin College.

The all-rounder followed up his two wickets after Shropshire had been put in by striking 10 fours in his 117 ball knock.

He shared in an opening stand of 64 with Ollie Westbury (21) and, after a mid innings wobble had left the County on 117-5, a further unbeaten 60 with Adam Finch (23 not out).

It enabled Worcestershire to overhaul their 174 target with nine overs to spare.

Shropshire openers Steve Leach – brother of Worcestershire club captain Joe – and Omar Ali put on 68 before the former was lbw to Rhodes for 27.

Then Pete Clark proved effective in picking up three wickets, including Ali for 36, and former Worcestershire batsman Alexei Kervezee (24).

Clarke finished with the fine figures of 10-1-34-3 while Matt Davis (4-1-11-2) and Rhodes (7.2-0-31-2) also enjoyed some tangible reward for their efforts.

Finch (10-2-25-1) and fellow paceman Pat Brown (10-0-19-1) proved difficult to get away.

George Scrimshaw continued his comeback from injury by sharing the new ball and sending down four overs for 11 runs.
