Rhodes Says Moeen Is “very Important Cog” In England Dressing Room

Worcestershire Director Of Cricket Steve Rhodes says Moeen Ali has become "a very important cog" in the England dressing room.

Rhodes saw at first hand the way Moeen is regarded by his international team-mates when part of the coaching set-up for the recent series in Bangladesh and how he is "looked up to by many of the squad."

The 29-year-old has firmly established himself in all three formats of the game with his country since making his debut nearly three years ago as an opener in an ODI in the West Indies.

Moeen made important contributions with ball and bat at various time in the Bangladesh series which ended 1-1.

And today he again showed his worth by making 99 not out on day one of the first Test in India (see separate story).

Rhodes said: "He did well in Bangladesh, especially in those conditions where he is going to play a major part with the ball. He is obviously a really important part of the set-up, batting five there and being one of the main spinners.

"He had a very busy two matches, but that's the way Mo likes to play his cricket, being busy and active.

"Mo is obviously passionate about his Liverpool Football Club but other than that, his religion, family and cricket take priority and because of that, he would rather be doing things and be busy during the matches rather than just playing a small part.

"Have I seen him develop a lot in the past three years? Not just as a player but as a person as well. He is definitely a person that is looked up to by many of the squad.

"He is a bit of a glue that gells it all together. He has got a great sense of humour, as you know, and the other Asian lads, Adil Rashid and Haseeb Hameed very much respect him and look up to him and he looks after them.

"He is a very important cog in the dressing room, gets on really well with all the players.

"Obviously Cooky, Stokesy and the other guys are all important but Moeen is now proving to be quite an important person in making sure that dressing room functions well."
