Reaction To Day One Worcs Versus Glamorgan

Reaction To Day One Worcs Versus Glamorgan

Steve Rhodes praised his side's fighting qualities as Worcestershire struck back with the ball on day one of the Specsavers County Championship clash with Glamorgan at New Road.

The home side were in all sorts of trouble at 37-5 but partially recovered to make 163 thanks chiefly to 43 from Joe Leach and 40 from Ross Whiteley who added 66 for the seventh wicket.

Then the Worcestershire bowlers claimed five Glamorgan wickets for 118 by the close with Leach picking up two and Charlie Morris, Ed Barnard and Jack Shantry one apiece.

Director of Cricket Rhodes said: "We fought back quite well. At 37 for five we were in all sorts of trouble and it was not necessarily down to the pitch.

"We played a few shots we’d like to rewind and play again but the way we fought back was good.

"It was then a wholehearted effort by the bowlers.”

Glamorgan batsman Will Bragg said: “At the start of the day we hit our straps quite well and it was a good effort by the bowlers to get them out for163.

“The pitch is quite slow, slower than normal, but the ball was swinging nicely for our bowlers once the lacquer had gone off it after 10 overs.

“It was the same when they bowled but we could have been in a stronger position but for a couple of sloppy shots. The morning session tomorrow will be important now. We want to get in front and put them under a bit of pressure.”
