Worcestershire CCC legend, Phil Newport, will be the guest speaker when Worcestershire Cricket Society stage their second winter cricket evening of 2022-2023 on Tuesday (November 8) in the Graeme Hick Pavilion (7.30pm).
Newport was a superb exponent of swing bowling for the best part of 17 years at New Road and ended his career with 825 first class wickets for Worcestershire, the 11thhighest tally on the county’s all-time list.
His tally of 314 List A wickets for Worcestershire was only bettered by Stuart Lampitt (370) and Richard Illingworth (358).
Newport, who was 60 last month, was a key component in the Worcestershire side which won a host of trophies in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
He made three Test appearances for England and took seven wickets on his debut against Sri Lanka in 1988.
That call-up came at the conclusion of the most prolific season of Newport’s career when 93 first class wickets helped Worcestershire to their first County Championship title for 24 years.
He achieved 50 or more first class wickets in a season on eight occasions, including five in succession from 1991 to 1995.
Non Society members can attend on Tuesday for an admission charge of £5.
