It was a sobering return to Vitality Blast T20 action for Worcestershire Rapids who were consigned to a 59-run defeat on a chastening night at Edgbaston.
A brutal assault from Zen Malik and Beau Webster piled on a record 177-run second wicket partnership that blew the visitors away as the Bears made an imposing 224 in their 20 overs.
Adam Hose (49) top-scored in the reply for the Rapids, but the loss of frequent wickets proved terminal once again as Worcestershire’s chase fell well short.
Attentions now quickly turn to Sunday’s clash with Somerset, with any hopes of a knockout place resting on a win as the Rapids return to New Road.
Anticipating a seismic showdown with the noisy neighbours on Friday night, the stage was set for Worcestershire Rapids to return to Vitality Blast T20 action for the first time in a fortnight.
Chasing not only a crucial fourth win of the competition in 2026, but also a rare T20 double over Warwickshire Bears, skipper Brett D’Oliveira won a pivotal toss at Edgbaston and backed his side to bowl first.
Tom Taylor took the new ball and needed just four balls to strike upon his return to full fitness, removing the dangerous Rob Yates for nought when the opener scooped the ball straight to the onrushing Matthew Waite at short fine leg.
Australian Beau Webster joined Zen Malik, who quickly dominated the early exchanges, powering the ball to the boundary and cashing in on two missed opportunities in the field to take all the momentum.
The skipper acted with haste to change the pace of the game, throwing the ball to spinner Fateh Singh in the fifth over, but his efforts were to no avail as the aggressive Malik continued his march, powering the Bears to 79-1 at the end of the powerplay.
A crucial chance went begging midway through Sikandar Raza’s second over as the ball slid between keeper Gareth Roderick and the stumps when Malik was out of his ground, a miss that would prove costly.
Webster raced to a brutal fifty as the visitors struggled to find a way to stop the haemorrhage of runs, with a change of ends for Ben Allison and Fateh Singh to no avail.
Bears were rocketing along at 11.6 an over, shortly before Malik’s incredible knock was ended by the relentless Waite, who got one to rise on the former Worcestershire Academy man who was well caught by the skipper for 99.
The Rapids cashed in, through a piece of individual brilliance by Allison, this time in the field as the seamer swept around from extra cover to pick up and release the ball with pinpoint accuracy to complete a stunning direct hit and run-out Webster for a 44-ball-79.
Sikandar Raza wrestled some more momentum back as he bowled Dan Mousley (2) with the very next ball, followed an over later by a tidy catch at deep midwicket off the bowling of Usama Mir to dismiss Ed Barnard.
A fifth wicket in 15 balls slowed the Bears’ charge at 193-6 when Waite did well to hold onto a tough catch at short third man to give Tom Taylor a second wicket of the night, but four wickets, including three run outs, in the last over saw a chaotic finish to the Bears’ innings on 224 all-out.
New opening pair Isaac Mohammed and Kashif Ali set the tone early in the chase, with promoted man Kashif nailing a four and a six in the second over as he made his intentions clear.
The loss of Isaac in the third over for seven did the Rapids no favours, but Gareth Roderick looked to maintain the tempo with two more boundaries that kept the visitors’ scoring rate up towards 10-an-over.
Kashif was striking at 200, racing to 22, but Worcestershire were pegged back once again when their opener mistimed a shot into the legside and was well caught by Beau Webster, who held onto a tough chance over his head.
A tough ask was made that much more difficult for the Rapids when Roderick was pinned LBW attempting to sweep a full ball from Jordan Thompson for 17 as the visitors slipped to 51-3 at the end of the powerplay.
New pair Adam Hose and Sikandar Raza looked to revitalise their side’s run chase, but when the Zimbabwe skipper was bowled for 12 by Usman Tariq, Worcestershire had it all to do.
Hose batted on, nailing a ruthless pull shot into the Hollies at the start of the 11th, deciding to pull the trigger with his side requiring upwards of 15 an over shortly after the halfway mark.
The former Bear tucked into the spin of Mousley, lashing a four through cow corner and a flat six over deep backward square at the start of the 12th, but his efforts were in vain as he lost his partner D’Oliveira to the penultimate ball of the over as he edged behind for one.
Matthew Waite gave it his all, launching some hefty blows into the stands on his way to (39 off 25), as he and Hose continued valiantly into the death overs, but by the time Hose was bowled one short of his half-century, the result was already confirmed.
The Rapids must dust themselves off ahead of the impending visit of reigning champions Somerset in just two days’ time, with the hosts in need of a win in order to keep any realistic qualification hopes alive.
