Worcestershire edged their noses in front against Middlesex as a determined display with the ball saw the home side take eight wickets on the opening day of Rothesay County Championship action at New Road.
A nip and tuck day’s play saw momentum sway back and forth, but four wickets for Adam Finch and the returning Ben Allison’s 3-69 helped peg back the visitors, who’s grip loosened after an assured start.
Sam Robson’s 70 dominated a second wicket stand worth 94 with Max Holden (49 from 151), before a revitalised Pears attack hit back in the afternoon session.
Two wickets in two balls from Finch stalled Middlesex late on, as Leus du Plooy’s 85 kept the visitors well in the fight, before Finch removed him in the penultimate over of the day to leave the game finely poised at 291-8 heading into day two.
After an absence of three weeks, there was a palpable sense of optimism around New Road on Friday morning as Worcestershire returned to Rothesay County Championship action for the first time in just under a month.
After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, Captain Brett D’Oliviera announced a raft of changes to the starting eleven that would take on Middlesex, with Ben Allison making a first appearance of the summer.
Notably, however, it was Academy graduate Henry Cullen who was awarded his county cap by vice-captain Jake Libby, making his first-class debut in place of the absent Adam Hose.
As the sun peaked through the clouds, it was the effervescent Tom Taylor who struck first in the fifth over of the day, when he caught the edge of Ben Geddes’ bat for five.
Beyers Swanepoel bustled in from the New Road End in a spritely early morning spell, searching for another breakthrough as the two sides level on points wrestled for early momentum.
Libby was unable to take a second catch at fourth slip when a tough chance came his way courtesy of an edge from Holden.
An arduous first hour saw the visitors dig in, soaking up pressure from either end as the returning Allison and Adam Finch hammered a length outside off-stump, making scoring chances difficult.
A side injury to seamer Matthew Waite that had kept him out of Tuesday’s T20 Blast fixture against Northants meant he was only able to participate as a batter, upping the onus on a five-pronged Pears seam attack.
Lunch was taken at 62-1, Robson returned shortly after the interval to chalk up his second fifty of the Division Two season, whilst Holden’s gritty knock saw score just 13 from 100 deliveries at the other end.
With just 16 points separating second and seventh place in Division Two, the attritional nature of the contest continued into the afternoon, as two sides searching for a third win of the season resisted one another.
Worcestershire’s seamers continued to battle hard on a docile surface, with the next chance coming via a mix-up in the middle that left Robson well short of his ground at the non-strikers’ end, but a poor throw saved the opener’s blushes.
Five balls after passing 100, the returning Ben Allison claimed the key scalp of Robson, with the Middlesex batter departing for a disciplined 70 after chopping onto his own stumps in the 46th over.
Featuring for the first time in this campaign after a delayed start through injury, Allison hit back with a second wicket in an impressive spell as he nipped one back that castled Holden, with the left-hander forced to depart for a turgid 151-ball-49.
Worcestershire’s efforts to capitalise were defied as the afternoon rolled on, with Swanepoel going at under three runs an over in an efficient yet unrewarded spell.
Brett D’Oliveira entered the fray shortly before the tea interval, but with Middlesex’s fourth wicket partnership ticking past fifty in the New Road sunshine, the Tea interval provided the hosts with an opportunity to recharge their bowling batteries.
With play finely poised as the players re-emerged after tea, the momentum of the day swung drastically when Adam Finch roared into life by taking two wickets in successive balls.
In a pivotal 67th over, the right-arm seamer first pinned Falconer LBW for 37 with a ball that shaped back to beat his defences, before sending Joe Cracknell on his way for a first-ball duck as the hosts wrestled back momentum at 199-5.
Reinvigorated and back in the driving seat, the Pears looked to seize the moment with all-rounder Ethan Brookes coming in from the New Road End, bowling a superb spell that built pressure and played a part in the sixth wicket of the day, which followed soon after.
Finch’s impressive return saw him collect the scalp of Bosch for just four when a full ball hurried the overseas batter, which he could only spoon to Waite at mid-on as the fightback continued.
Visiting skipper du Plooy passed fifty as play entered the final hour, but Worcestershire’s perseverance was rewarded when Gohar offered no shot to a full ball that was destined for the stumps to give the hosts a seventh and Allison his third.
Finch ended du Plooy’s repost for a superb 85 in the dying embers with a vicious ball that rose on the batter, to cap a superb effort with the ball as Middlesex closed 291-8 at stumps.
