Worcestershire Women’s Rapids 2026 Vitality T20 Blast campaign came to an end away to Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens on Sunday, and although disappointed with the result, Head Coach Ed Wilson recognised his side’s improvement made over the course of the season.
The Rapids endured a topsy-turvy summer of Blast action, with highlights including a nine-wicket demolition of high-flying Middlesex and a nail biting three-run victory away to Kent.
However, defeats to Derbyshire and Gloucestershire in somewhat disappointing fashion meant that the final Women’s League 2 table would be decided on the last day of the competition.
Ed Wilson’s side travelled to Glamorgan, who have proven to be the strongest in this year’s division, looking to display their winning form against those above them in the standings.
This proved to be one challenge too far for Worcestershire however, coming away from South Wales empty handed and leaving Head Coach Wilson frustrated.
“We’re massively disappointed to lose.
“We played against the best side in the competition and some of our skills didn’t quite stand up under the pressure that they put us under today, which is disappointing.
“We spoke about it in the dressing room, there were 20 dot balls in the powerplay which is not good enough at this level.
“But when you play against good teams at this level, they don’t give you any freebies and you have to work that little bit harder.”
Despite Worcestershire’s disappointment, opening batter Amy Griffiths continued to impress with both the bat, top scoring with 36, and the ball, taking the Rapids’ only two wickets of the day in back-to-back deliveries.
The youngster’s inclusion into the squad having returned from injury has coincided with Worcestershire’s late bid for Final’s Day qualification, something of which that has pleased the Head Coach.
“She got two wickets in two balls at the start to blow the game open.
“She’s a really good player and we’ve only been able to have her for three of the eight games which is a bit annoying.
“But we know what kind of cricketer she is and what she brings to the team.
“She brings a bit of balance with her left handed batting as well, so we’re looking forward to getting her fully fit for the fifty over block of games now and hopefully she can keep contributing.”
Attention now turns back to the Metro Bank One Day Cup competition for the Rapids, who will be eager to build on their improvements established through the Blast to attack their remaining fixtures.
Although not the end of the 20-over season Wilson would have wanted, the fact his side remained competitive to the final day of the league phase adds even more reason to be excited.
“You want to be going deep into competitions and we still had something to play for today.
“We weren’t quite good enough today but over the competition I think we’ve shown some real signs of improvement compared to last season.
“We’ve got five games left and we want to attack them as best as we can.
“We’ve got a couple of weeks off now so that’s a chance for some of the girls to reset and recharge and get a bit of form, before we go again and give it everything we’ve got.”
