Moeen Ali's first ICC World Cup is over after he was ruled out of England's final Pool A match against Afghanistan in Sydney through injury on Friday.
A scan revealed that the Worcestershire all-rounder suffered a left-sided abdominal strain whilst bowling during England's 15 run defeat against Bangladesh in Adelaide on Monday.
Moeen was able to bat in his usual opening role and scored 19 before being run-out.
He has been an ever present during England's five World Cup fixtures and, before that, the seven ODIs in Sri Lanka and the Tri-Series against Australia and India Down Under during January.
The 27-year-old will be re-assessed when he returns to the United Kingdom and he will be hoping the injury is insufficient to stop him being part of next month's tour of the West Indies.
Fellow all-rounder Chris Woakes will also miss the Afghanistan match with a left foot injury sustained during the Bangladesh match that sealed England's elimination from the competition.
An England and Wales Cricket Board statement reads: "Scans revealed Chris Woakes has a left third metatarsal stress reaction and Moeen Ali has a left sided abdominal strain.
"Both players have been ruled out of the match against Afghanistan on Friday and will be reassessed when the team returns to the UK."
Moeen scored his first World Cup century in the victory over Scotland – the only win England have managed in five matches.
