MOEEN MAKES FIRST BREAKTHROUGH BEFORE ANDERSON PUTS ENGLAND ON TOP

Moeen Ali claimed the first wicket of England’s three match Test Series with West Indies before a fine spell with the second new ball from James Anderson ensured the tourists ended on top at the Kensington Oval.

Worcestershire all-rounder Moeen has acquired a habit of striking early in his spells for his country.

He continued that trend by removing debutant opener John Campbell with 54 on the board.

Campbell had made an aggressive 44 but in Moeen’s second over he went for a sweep shot and was plumb lbw.

It was Moeen’s 164th Test wicket and the perfect start to the New Year after his 18 wickets in three Tests in Sri Lanka.

Moeen and England toiled away for the majority of the day and the 31-year-old bowled two spells of seven and five overs in the pre-lunch and final session.

He finished with figures of 12-1-59-1.

England’s record wicket-taker Anderson proved to be too difficult for the Windies batsmen to handle late in the day and he ended with 4-33 from 24 overs out of a total of 264-8 from 89.2 overs.
