Moeen Ai was dismissed for 12 on the second day of the third Investec Test against India at the Ageas Bowl.
The Worcestershire all-rounder came in at number six with England standing on 378-4 in the 128th over.
Moeen instantly got off the mark with two down to third man off Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
He then produced an impressive stroke in cutting Pankaj Singh to the boundary.
But with the total on 420 in the 136th over, Moeen attempted to pull Kumar and the ball ended up in the hands of Ajinkya Rahane who took a good catch at second slip.
Moeen will now be looking to have an impact with the ball as England declared on 569-7 after centuries from Gary Ballance and Ian Bell.
India reached 25-1 off 14 overs by the close.
Moeen has picked up eight wickets in the opening two matches of the five match series.
