Mo Ends On The Winning Side As England Edge Home In Thriller

Worcestershire all-rounder Moeen Ali ended on the winning side as England edged out Bangladesh by 22 runs on the final morning of the first Test in Chittagong.

Man of the match Ben Stokes tipped the final outcome in England's favour by claiming the final two wickets.

Taijul Islam (16) and Shafiul Islam (0) were both out lbw in the space of three balls but not until both decisions had been reviewed – the first successfully by England and the second unsuccessfully by Bangladesh.

That extended the number of reviews during the game by players to a highest ever figure of 26 for a Test match.

Moeen made a significant contribution in the game, his first innings 68 after being promoted to number five helping to rescue England and he then weighed in with five wickets.

He ended up with more wickets than fellow spinners, Gareth Batty (4) and Adil Rashid (3) but it was the efforts of Stuart Broad yesterday evening and Stoke this morning which sealed victory.

Moeen has now taken 82 Test wickets at an average of 41.12 and during this game he went past 1,500 Test runs and now has a tally of 1,536 at an average of 34.90.

Worcestershire Director Of Cricket Steve Rhodes would also have enjoyed marking his first Test as part of the England coaching set-up on this trip with a victory.

The second Test will get underway in Dhaka on Friday.
