Malik Top Scores In Both Innings As Seconds Go Down At Stourbridge

Worcestershire Seconds suffered their first defeat of the season in the Second Eleven Championship when they went down by an innings and 95 runs to Durham Seconds at Stourbridge.

The Seconds had won their opening two Championship games against Leicestershire at Oakham School and Northamptonshire at Kidderminster.

But a side without skipper George Rhodes and Alex Hepburn, who were both promoted to the first team squad for the Royal London One-Day Cup clash with Yorkshire, were twice bowled out cheaply in spin-friendly conditions.

A positive was Zen Malik top-scoring with 57 and 38 in both innings while Chris Russell enjoyed a five wicket haul for the second Championship match in a row.

But the Seconds, who resumed on 181-8 in their first innings, quickly lost their last two wickets and were bowled out in their second innings for 167 in 39.2 overs.

Former Yorkshire slow left armer Gurman Randhawa enjoyed another successful spell with figures of 5-22 giving him match figures of 9-72.

In their second innings, Seconds openers Tom Fell (17) and Ollie Westbury (37) put on 32 and then the latter and Malik added 57 for the third wicket to take the total to 96-2.

Westbury hit five fours in his 68 ball knock and Malik also struck five boundaries in his 53 ball innings.

But only keeper Joe Dodds (34) of the remaining batsmen offered much resistance as Randhawa ran through the middle and lower order.
