Ed Barnard scored his first senior 50 but Worcestershire Rapids lost by 56 runs despite showing lower order defiance in the Royal London One-Day Cup match with Somerset at Taunton.
The Rapids lost three early wickets when a good start was needed in pursuit of a 306 target and were 82-5 at one stage despite a solid 37 from skipper Daryl Mitchell.
But Barnard went to his half century off just 38 balls with four fours and a six to add to his three wickets earlier in the day and there were useful knocks from Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Ben Cox and Jack Shantry.
They were eventually bowled out for 249 in the 46th over.
The Rapids will now look to chalk up their first win of the campaign when they entertain Northants Steelbacks on Sunday (10.30am start).
When Somerset batted, a fine 93 not out off 91 balls from Tom Cooper helped the home side close on 305-7 from their 50 overs.
Worcestershire made one change from the side which went down to Yorkshire Vikings yesterday with Shantry replacing the rested Joe Leach.
Somerset elected to bat and openers Adam Hose and Tom Abell put on 59 before Barnard broke the stand in his first over – the last of the mandatory 10 over powerplay.
Former New Road triallist Hose on 46 fell to a good catch by Richard Oliver at deep square leg. Peter Trego hit Barnard for six and four off successive deliveries but the former England Under-19 player responded with two wickets in two overs.
He bowled Trego for 15 and trapped Abell (24) lbw and at that stage had the excellent figures of 3-16.
Mitchell brought himself into the attack and struck in his third over when James Hildreth (33) was caught at backward point by Charlie Morris.
It became 146-5 when Jamie Overton, promoted up the order, perished at long on to Tom Fell off Brett D'Oliveira.
Cooper and Jim Allenby added 69 before the latter went for a big hit and was bowled to give D'Oliveira his second success.
Mitchell then held a well judged catch to dismiss Craig Overton (8) in the final over from Saeed Ajmal at 229-7.
Some late hitting by Cooper, who faced 91 balls and struck three sixes and seven fours, and Michael Bates lifted the final total past 300.
The Worcestershire bowling figures were: Morris 9-0-56-0, Shantry 9-0-70-0, Ajmal 10-0-45-1, Barnard 8-2-60-3, D'Oliveira 10-0-53-2, Mitchell 4-0-16-1.
When the Rapids began their reply, Richard Oliver off drove his first delivery from Craig Overton for four but in the same over nicked through to Allenby at second slip without addition to his score.
Fell reached 10 but then lofted Tim Groenewald straight up in the air and Jack Leach took a simple catch at mid on.
It became 28-3 when D'Oliveira was caught at third slip by Trego off Craig Overton.
Mitchell and Kohler-Cadmore added 42 before the Worcestershire skipper on 37 was bowled by Jack Leach.
The big-hitting Ross Whiteley was caught on the square leg boundary by Abell to give Jack Leach another wicket with Worcestershire 82-5.
Trego came into the attack and his first delivery ended the innings of Kohler-Cadmore on 37 when he was caught by Groenewald at mid off.
Good resistance came from Ben Cox and Ed Barnard who added 60 in just 8.2 overs for the seventh wicket.
Cox struck two massive straight sixes but on 37 he top edged a sweep at the recalled Jack Leach and Hose clung onto the catch at short fine leg.
Barnard smashed Leach over the boundary as he continued to show defiance as the 200 came up.
His fine knock ended when, after making 51, he hit a full toss from Craig Overton into the hands of Hose at mid off and then Ajmal (8) edged a short ball from Trego and was caught behind.
Shantry struck some brave blows before he was last out for 31, holing out to deep third man off Trego.
