Leach’s Troops Well Placed In Battle For Promotion

Leach’s Troops Well Placed In Battle For Promotion

Worcestershire are still well placed in the Specsavers County Championship Division Two promotion battle despite seeing their 100% record ended by Sussex at the 1st Central County Ground earlier this week.

New skipper Joe Leach's side are only five points off the second promotion spot currently held by Kent ahead of the start of today's clash with Glamorgan at New Road.

The County had won six Championship matches in a row – two at the tail-end of last season and four in 2017 – before the innings and seven runs setback at Hove.

Only twice in the club's proud history has a more elongated sequence of successive Championship victories been put together.

The record run is eight wins on the trot during the latter part of the 1965 Championship winning year and the beginning of 1966 when the County came runners-up.

Then next best is a sequence of seven victories between July and August 1961.

The County's recent proud run of six wins on the bounce exceeded the five in a row of 1964 – the first Championship triumph – 1987-1988, 1993 and 2003.

To round the figures off, Worcestershire won four games on the spin in 1909, 1911, 1947, 1964, 2006 and 2014.
