Tom Kohler-Cadmore admits his main aim for 2015 is to "nail four day cricket" after an up and down debut campaign with Worcestershire in the red ball form of the game.
Former Malvern College pupil Kohler-Cadmore earned a place in the county's LV = County Championship side after impressing during the pre-season tour of Abu Dhabi – where the county are currently preparing for the forthcoming campaign.
He lost his place after five games but went away and worked on his game and earned a recall as he played in 13 of the 16 four-day matches in the promotion triumph.
Kohler-Cadmore, who made useful runs against a UAE X1 and Derbyshire in the county's two matches to date in Abu Dhabi, said: "I learnt a lot throughout the whole season with batting and just the whole area of cricket.
"I just felt I'd been given a chance. I didn't think 'it's from schools cricket to first team county cricket'
"I just expected myself to do well. Obviously at the start things didn't go so well. I got dropped and I thought 'fair enough, I've done poorly.'
"I looked at things and it wasn't a falling over or balance issue. It was more the fact I was setting up wrong, for the ball to be swinging away.
"I didn't see it as a major technique thing. I did a little bit of work and when I came back into the side I scored 85 against Glamorgan and then 99 v Leicestershire.
"It got a bit better but I'd still expect myself to do better than I did.
"I also did work with Ben Davies and Ross Dewar on my running just to try and get me quicker throughout the season because early doors I wasn't reacting quickly enough in the field and by the end my fielding was a lot better."
Kohler-Cadmore added: "You learn more from your failures than if it is going well. If it is going well, you will get a dropped catch or it is going bad for you you will get a bad decision or a diving catch.
"That is cricket. Everyone understands you are going to go through good and bad patches.
"You do all the work now in the winter. You go into the season and you pick up little things that you will tinker with. You just find a way to manage things.
"I just try and improve all the time even if things are going well.
"I will go into this next season with a better understanding of where I'm good and not so good, make my strengths stronger and also to work on my weaknesses so they are not as weak."
As for the forthcoming season, Kohler-Cadmore said: "My main aim is to nail four day cricket because I feel T20 cricket takes care of itself.
"If you nail four day cricket…..if you look at Mitch, four day cricket was his number one goal, he did ridiculously well, and then with T20 he didn't worry about it.
"He just went out there and hit the ball. He was just enjoying himself and that is what T20 cricket is.
"In four-day cricket, you've got to make them work for your wicket. In T20 you play a shot and you can take risks and you can come off the field and think 'it just wasn't my night.'
"In four-day cricket, you are meant to have low risk and not get out unless it's a really good ball."
