former worcestershire ccc paceman and football league keeper jim cumbes will be worcestershire cricket society’s guest speaker at their 20th anniversary lunch in the view on sunday, october 6.
cumbes enjoyed a distinguished career in both codes before becoming ceo of lancashire.
he made his first class cricket debut for lancashire in 1963 and then had a spell with surrey before joining worcestershire in 1972 and spending the best part of a decade at New Road.
cumbes registered his career best figures of 6-24 against yorkshire in 1977 and was awarded his county cap the following year.
he had a brief spell at warwickshire before hanging up his cricketing spikes with 379 first class and 136 list a wickets to his name.
cumbes’ football career included spells with tranmere, west brom and aston villa and then portland timbers in the nasl before he spent three seasons with worcester city.
he helped the city win the southern league title in 1979 when 9,600 fans packed into st. george’s lane for the decider versus kettering.
