Fifties For Whiteley And Malik As Seconds Go Under In Final Match

Worcestershire Seconds went down by 45 runs in their final match of the 2016 campaign against Hampshire Seconds at the Ageas Bowl nursery ground.

Ross Whiteley hit his second half century of the game and there was also a late order fifty from Zen Malik.

But a target of 305 was just out of reach and Worcestershire were eventually bowled out for 259 as the game ended with more than a day to spare.

Coach Kevin Sharp's side batted against orange balls in their second innings as part of an ECB experiment after facing pink balls in the first innings.

Hampshire had resumed on 102-6 in their second innings and were eventually bowled out for 179 with the last two wickets adding 55.

Spinner Ben Twohig picked up two more wickets to finish with 3-48 and there was one more for paceman George Scrimshaw who ended with 4-46.

Worcestershire lost wickets at steady intervals despite the efforts of Whiteley who hit 65 off 93 deliveries with 10 fours.

The visitors were 157-7 when Malik came to the wicket on the dismissal of Whiteley who was caught at cover.

He shared in an eighth wicket stand of 54 with Josh Dell (28) and then received support in stands of 30 and 18 with Billy Cox and Scimshaw.

Malik was finally last out for 58 from 70 balls with one six and nine fours – a third victim of leg spinner Mason Crane while Fraser Hay also picked up three wickets.
