County Legend Don Kenyon’s Widow To Celebrate 90Th Birthday

County Legend Don Kenyon’s Widow To Celebrate 90Th Birthday

Don Kenyon was a true Worcestershire CCC legend – and his widow Jean will celebrate her 90th birthday on Friday.

Jean, who was born in Brierley Hill, was married to Don – Worcestershire's record run scorer – in 1947 and they were together for 49 years until his death in 1996 at the age of 72.

She continues to take a great interest in the County and regularly attends the Worcestershire Cricket Society meetings at New Road every month.

Jean received a warm round of applause when details of her forthcoming birthday were announced at the latest Society meeting last night.

Worcestershire CEO Tom Scott, who was one of the guest speakers at the meeting, said: "The word legend is often over-used in sport but it certainly applies to Don Kenyon.

"He captained the County to their first two County Championship titles in 1964 and 1965 and was club president when the titles were claimed again in 1988 and 1989.

"It is great that his widow, Jean, continues to show such enthusiasm for the cricket club Don played for with such great distinction and everyone at the club wishes her a happy 90th birthday and a great day on Friday."

Don scored 37,002 first class runs with 74 hundreds and 180 half centuries and played eight Tests for England.

He was a Wisden Cricketer Of The Year in 1963, was an England selector from 1965 to 1972.
