COUNTY CAPTAIN LEACH SHINES FOR SHREWS IN QUICKFIRE VICTORY

Worcestershire CCC club captain Joe Leach made a telling contribution with bat and ball as Shrewsbury triumphed by nine wickets over Kenilworth Wardens in a Birmingham Premier League Premier Division match lasting only 35 overs today.

Leach continued his comeback from a stress fracture of the back in successful fashion.

The 27-year-old took the new ball after Shrewsbury put Kenilworth into bat and he returned figures of 7-0-15-4.

Mike Barnard – elder brother of Worcestershire all-rounder Ed Barnard – opened the bowling from the other end and he finished with 10-1-39-3 as Kenilworth were bowled out for 65 in 21.2 overs.

Leach was soon back in action after Shrewsbury lost a wicket with five runs on the board and he hurried his side to victory.

His unbeaten 42 off 38 balls batting at number three contained seven fours and the Shrews reached their modest target in 13.4 overs.

Leach has now played three times for Shrewsbury and twice for Worcestershire Seconds on his return to bowling last month.

The all-rounder was allowed to bowl 10 overs in each innings against Lancashire in the Championship match at Northern CC and ended with match figures of 6-28 from 20 overs.

He then bowled nine overs for 21 runs in Warwickshire Seconds first innings in this week’s Championship match at Barnt Green but then play was washed out on the final two days.
