County Awaiting News On Ashwin Availability For Finale Of Season

Worcestershire are waiting news on whether Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin will be available or not for the finale of the season.

Ashwin arrived at New Road with the intention of playing in the last four Specsavers County Championship matches.

He picked up eight wickets and made useful runs in the win over Gloucestershire and will play against leaders Nottinghamshire tomorrow at Trent Bridge.

But India’s three ODIs against Australia have been brought forward from October with the first of them in Chennai on September 17.

The County are waiting to see if Ashwin is selected for that series or whether India, as has been the case in the current games in Sri Lanka, opt to play their younger spinners.

Director Of Cricket Steve Rhodes said: “Still no news. That should come soon now. India have got another T20 to play against Sri Lanka.

“Initially in the Future Tours Programme, the India versus Australia ODIs were down to be played in October.

“But since we did the deal with Ashwin, they decided to tag them on the end of Australia’s tour of Bangladesh.

“We can’t do anything about that. We’ve just got in many ways hope that he plays for us.

“India are going through a period where they are maybe looking at their other younger spinners to see how good they are.

“They did pretty well against Sri Lanka and they may want to test them against Australia.

“We’ve just got to wait and see. We can’t predict what is going to happen and have to respect whatever decision is taken.”

Worcestershire have named a 12 strong squad and will select from the players who impressed against Gloucestershire plus paceman Jack Shantry.
