Worcestershire Supporters’ Association’s 2018 Calendar is again proving popular with its members and supporters.
The 2016 and 2017 calendars sold out quickly and there has already been a healthy response to the latest edition.
But copies can still be obtained priced £7.50 on matchdays from the Supporters’ Association shop at the back of the Basil D’Oliveira Stand.
They can also be purchased via committee member Dave Kennedy, who can be contacted on 07746 833894 or 01386 793212, at a cost of £7.50 plus postage and packaging.
Cheques for the calendars should be made payable to ‘WCCSA’.
An innovation for 2018 edition is a list of each month’s birthdays (and deaths) for the 500 Pears cricketers in the County Championship since 1899 until the end of the 2016 season.
All that is, except the ‘Magnificent Seven’ – the players whose birthdays could not be found by Andrew Thomas when researching his book ‘Pears 150.’
They are number 17 – WH Wilkes (1866?); 23 – WH Hill; 42 – H Wilson (1873?); 78 – JG Higginson (Jan 1885?); 85 – PJ Morris; 94 – W Baker; and 172 – H Williams.
Selecting your best monthly team of Worcestershire CCC stars listed in the calendar will not be easy.
For example, who would be the Pears wicket-keeper for June – SJ Rhodes or SM Davies?
Could Joe Leach captain the October XI with HK Foster available?
And who takes October’s new ball? (from, RDT Perks, P Newport, V Holder, AA Donald, Zaheer Khan) plus the other bowlers (Basil D’Oliveira, Saeed Ajmal, DN Patel, FB Warne, GJ Batty). They would all make life interesting for October’s keeper, Roy Booth!
Pears batsmen born in May (GM Turner, D Kenyon, PA Jaques, GA Hick), or June (RGA Headley, TW Graveney, Moeen Ali, CL King) might fancy their chances batting against October’s bowlers.
There are 94 days in the year without any Pears birthdays. The most popular date is 24th November with seven cricketers, one of whom is Sir Ian Botham.
Purchase a copy of the Supporters’ Association calendar and you can mull over the above conundrums at your leisure during the winter months until the 2018 season is upon us.
