Distinguished cricket and football journalist-author Brian Scovell will be the guest of the Worcestershire Cricket Society's final winter meeting of 2016-2017 tomorrow evening (Tuesday) in the Hick Pavilion (7.30pm).
Scovell's curriculum vitae speaks for itself since he began his working life as a part-time football reporter on the Isle Of Wight Mercury – while still at school – from 1950-53.
He had spells on the Isle of Wight Guardian, Wolverhampton Express And Star, Norwich Evening News and the Press Association before becoming the Daily Sketch's cricket and football reporter in 1960.
Scovell stayed in this role for 11 years and then took up a similar position with the Daily Mail for 29 years up until 2000 before before becoming a freelance journalist.
He has covered more than 350 Test matches in all the Test match playing countries except Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Scovell has also reported on the same number of international football matches including the 1966, 1982, 1986 and 1990 World Cups and visited 92 countries to date.
He has also interviewed five Prime Ministers, Prince Charles, the Princess of Wales, Henry Kissinger and Enoch Powell amongst other distinguished people.
Scovell was elected a life Member of the Football Writers' Association (FWA) in 2001 and a life member of the Cricket Writers' Club (CWC) in 1996.
The list of excellent books he has written dates back to 1963 and the latest of these – 'The Conquests of 1966 – by Alf and Gary' combines football and cricket and will be available to purchase tomorrow evening.
It concentrates on 1966 when Alf Ramsey led England to World Cup glory and Gary Sobers was the star of the West Indies side which toured England that summer.
A reminder that non Cricket Society members can attend tomorrow evening for an admission charge of £3.
