Tim Bresnan, who could face Worcestershire in the opening LV = County Championship match of 2015 on April 12 at New Road, is to join the England Lions squad for the later stages of their one-day series against South Africa A.
Yorkshire paceman Bresnan will fly home from Hobart, where he has been playing for the Hurricanes in the Big Bash, over the weekend, and then head straight back out to South Africa ahead of the third of the five-match series in Potchefstroom next Saturday.
National Selector James Whitaker said: "The Lions one-day series in South Africa means we can have a group of players involved in high quality and competitive 50-over cricket in the weeks leading up to the World Cup.
"Joining the squad will give Tim the opportunity to show that he is ready to be considered if a replacement is required."
The series starts in Bloemfontein on Sunda.
Five players have already joined the Lions squad since their two drawn four-day matches against South Africa A in Harry Gurney, Stephen Parry, Samit Patel, Jason Roy and Ben Stokes.
