Moeen Ali could have a massively key role to play with the bat on the final day of the second Ashes Test if England are to square the series in Adelaide.
They will resume in the early hours of tomorrow morning on 176-4 – requiring another 178 to make it 1-1 in the best of five series.
Worcestershire all-rounder Moeen should have gone to the wicket after Dawid Malan’s dismissal shortly before the end of the fourth day.
But he was kept back for the battles ahead tomorrow.
Instead Chris Woakes went in at number six as the ‘nightwatchman’ to accompany skipper Joe Root through the final stages.
Moeen will be looking to build on several promising starts since being promoted up the order against the Aussies in the absence of Ben Stokes.
The 30-year-old made 38 and 40 in the first Test and then 25 in the first innings of the current Test when he was brilliantly caught and bowled by Nathan Lyon.
It will be Woakes, Moeen and Jonny Bairstow along with Root who offer England the most hope of upsetting the odds.
