Worcestershire Academy went down by 42 runs in their Birmingham and District Premier League clash away to Walmley in round one of the Graham Williamson Trophy.
Zain Ul-Hassan was the most successful Academy bowler with 3-22 from eight overs after Walmley were put in and totalled 195-8 in their 40 overs.
Then Ollie Westbury hit a quickfire half-century for the Academy who were well placed in reply but they ultimately were dismissed for 153 in 36.3 overs.
The Academy entered the Trophy to obtain some experience of playing competitive cricket and will repeat the venture in a Tri-Series with Leicestershire and Northamptonshire later in the summer.
Aaron Thomason (44) and Andrew Hendry (39) put on 57 for the Walmley third wicket and their other main contributor was Tom Pyke (34).
Ul-Hassan's victims included Hendry and Pyke as the Academy were left a target of just under five runs an over.
Westbury and Will Wade got them off to an ideal start by putting on 68 for the first wicket in just 11.4 overs.
Wade departed for 20 but Westbury went onto reach his half century and in all struck one six and eight fours from just 60 balls.
But, after reaching 95-3, the game swung in the space of one over in which Amaan Farooq claimed three wickets.
He sent back Ul-Hassan, Josh Dell and Dillon Pennington with the first, fifth and sixth balls of the 22nd over.
Matt Davis and Ben Twohig tried to retrieve the situation with a seventh wicket stand of 44 but the last four wickets fell for 14 runs.
The Academy will now play in next weekend's plate competition.
