Worcs Skipper Mitchell Leads Mcc During Tour Of Japan

Worcestershire captain Daryl Mitchell is skippering the MCC during a nine game tour of Japan including a 50 over and 20 over match against the host nation.

The 30-year-old has been reunited with former New Road team-mate and wicket-keeper Ben Scott and flew out yesterday (Tuesday) for the 13-day tour with the first match on November 1.

Former England captain and Middlesex bowler John Emburey will manage the squad on a tour which takes in Chiba, Yokohama, Akishima, and Sano.

The players will also be giving coaching sessions to local children who would not usually have access to training facilities and coaches with professional backgrounds.

This will be the second time Mitchell has represented MCC in 2014 after turning out for the club alongside West Indies legend Brian Lara in the Lord’s bicentenary celebration match against Hertfordshire in June.

Mitchell, who signed a new four year contract with Worcestershire earlier in the month, said: “It’s an honour to be asked to captain MCC on this tour, and I’m really looking forward to it.

"We’ve got some exciting matches lined up and hopefully we can develop the cricket skills of the local children too.

"There’s a good bunch of players heading out there so I’m sure it will be very beneficial for everyone involved.”

MCC President David Morgan said: “MCC has long taken touring sides out to Japan and I’m delighted we have another group going out there to continue to promote the MCC Spirit of Cricket.

"We've’ve got an excellent group travelling to Japan and I’m sure the local budding cricketers will learn a lot from the vast experience of John Emburey, Daryl Mitchell and the rest of the squad.

"I’d like to thank the Japanese Cricket Foundation for the invitation and I look forward to continuing our fruitful relationship during my presidency.”
