Seconds Denied Victory As Last Gloucs Pair Survive Nearly 16 Overs

Worcestershire Seconds came close to forcing victory but were denied by the Gloucestershire Seconds last wicket pair of Robbie Montgomery and Thomas Hampton at Cheltenham College.

Brett D'Oliveira's excellent century and another fine knock from Joe Clarke enabled Worcestershire skipper Shaaiq Choudhry to set the home side a 364 target.

Ed Barnard's early three wicket blast and then a similar burst from George Scrimshaw reduced Gloucestershire to 239-9 with still 15.5 overs remaining.

But Montgomery and Hampton survived and in the process scored 74 runs as Gloucestershire closed on 313-9.

Worcestershire had resumed on 172-2 and D'Oliveira and Clarke extended their third wicket partnership to 112.

D'Oliveira was eventually caught at short extra cover for 135 made off 186 balls with one six and 20 fours.

Clarke followed up his first innings 201 not out with an unbeaten 71 before retiring after being struck on the helmet attempting a pull shot.

Barnard made 37 not out from 44 balls and Gareth Andrew his three sixes in a rapid 28 before being caught at deep square leg in the final over before lunch when the declaration was made.

Barnard then made early inroads into the Gloucestershire innings with three wickets in the space of eight balls.

Will Tavare was caught at short extra cover, Ian Cockbain was caught behind by Clarke and Jack Taylor was trapped lbw.

Miles Hammond (97) and Tom Smith (70) added 127 for the fifth wicket but then Scrimshaw brought about another flurry of wickets as they went from 196-4 to 239-9.

Barnard finished with 3-51 and paceman Scrimshaw, who is part of the county's 2014-15 Academy intake, with 4-47.
